To say that this year has been a strange one would be an understatement; we have all been challenged in ways that we never dreamt when we were waving “goodbye” to 2019 and welcoming in the New Year with excitement for what the future might bring.
With many travel plans and long-awaited holidays cancelled, millions of people are looking closer to home to enjoy a well-earned break. And as one of the UK’s premier tourist hot spots, the North Devon Coastline is enjoying unprecedented volumes of holidaymakers, flocking to enjoy the delights that we have to offer in the sunshine (and, occasionally, the rain!).
You can’t get more socially distanced than a self-catering seaside break at Westward Living. With over 60 acres of rolling hills and coastal vistas, our self-contained units allow you to socially distance with ease. And there are plenty of low-cost, fun-packed, memory-making activities for you to do while you’re here:
If you love fresh, locally sourced seafood, you will be spoilt for choice on your holiday in North Devon! Appledore Mussels offer locally sourced, day-fresh mussels and oysters; simply order online, collect from Appledore and prepare it in your fully equipped kitchen – delicious! Serene Sky Fishing also offer local catches – follow them on Facebook to see what is on offer; fish doesn’t get fresher or more delicious than this.
If you’re not a fishy fan, don’t despair! When it comes to local produce you will be spoilt for choice; with Ruby Red Beef from Clovelly, Parkham cheese and countless local bakeries, your food can be counted in metres rather than miles. For the freshest, best local produce from Stapleton Yogurts to picnic hampers, check out Local Farm Box, where you will get 10% off as one of our valued guests with your personalised code.
Miles of Sand
Forget crammed beaches where sun seekers are crammed in, desperately trying to reserve their scrap of sand! North Devon’s beaches are renowned for their vast expanses of sand, making it easier than ever to socially distance. Even on the busiest days, all you have to do is walk for an extra ten minutes and you will find your own private beach. Bliss! Westward Ho!, Instow, Hartland and Woolacombe are just a few unique local beaches renowned for their rugged beauty.
If you love an active holiday, North Devon is the place for you. Walk from your four or five-star holiday cottage to the Southwest Coast path, where you can walk ten miles to Clovelly (the most Instagrammable village in the UK), check out the diverse flora and fauna, relax on the clifftops with a picnic, or head to the beach where you can walk, swim, learn to surf or paddleboard.
Leaders in tourism have had to get creative to survive these turbulent times and this has meant great news for our holidaymakers as well as the locals! The nearby Big Sheep family holiday attraction has thought outside the box with its carefully placed bubbles and outdoor stage, allowing families and grown-ups to enjoy socially distanced theatres, gigs and events. From local talent to blockbuster movies, the festival vibe is undeniable as people enjoy themselves responsibly, and from a safe distance. If you prefer a more classic setting, check out Tapely Park’s outdoor theatre programme, which caters for an eclectic mix of genres, from Horrible Histories to Shakespeare.
This year may not have gone as planned. But if life gives you social distancing, Westward Living at Duckhaven Stud’s four-and-five-star self catering holiday cottages will help you to make the most beautiful memories – all you need is a sense of adventure, a little imagination and a face covering.
