Perched off the coast of North Devon, Lundy Island is a hidden treasure known for its rugged beauty, rich history, and diverse wildlife. If you’re staying at Westward Living Holiday Cottages this summer or early Autumn a day trip to Lundy Island is an experience not to be missed. In fact, it comes highly recommended by Kathy and Chris, the owners of Westward Living, who recently spent a day exploring the island themselves. After seeing Lundy every day from the grounds of Westward Living, they decided to visit and share just how special this place truly is with their guests.
Setting Sail from Bideford
Your adventure begins in the charming port town of Bideford, just a 10 minute short drive from Westward Living. As you make your way to the quay in the crisp morning air, excitement builds. September is the perfect time for this trip, as the summer crowds have thinned, leaving you to enjoy the island’s serene beauty in peace.
The journey across the Bristol Channel is aboard the MS Oldenburg, a beautifully restored ship that exudes a sense of nostalgia. As you sail, take in the stunning views of the North Devon coastline, and keep an eye out for dolphins, porpoises, and seals that often accompany the boat. The two-hour crossing gives you plenty of time to savour the anticipation of the day ahead. The boat has plenty of space for seating and a full equipped café, however its worth sitting on the deck if your not a good seafarer.
Stepping onto Lundy Island feels like stepping back in time. With no cars and only a handful of residents, the island’s peaceful atmosphere is a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For Kathy and Chris, this tranquillity was one of the highlights of their visit.
Start your exploration with a climb to the Old Lighthouse, the island’s most iconic landmark. Situated on the highest point of the island, it offers panoramic views that stretch across the Bristol Channel to the Devon coast. Kathy and Chris were particularly struck by the breathtaking scenery on a clear September day, when visibility allows you to see for miles, a camera is a must.
Lundy is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, something that Kathy and Chris, both nature lovers, truly appreciated. The island is a designated Marine Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to a variety of birds, including puffins and peregrine falcons. September is a fantastic time for birdwatching, as many migratory species pass through the island.
History buffs will also find plenty to explore, from Bronze Age settlements to medieval ruins. Kathy and Chris found the history of Lundy fascinating, particularly the ruins of Marsico Castle, which dates to the 13th century. If you are feeling brave then a dip in the Atlantic Ocean is a must, Kathy and Chris were lucky enough to swim with seals just before heading home.
As your day on Lundy draws to a close, you’ll return to the quay for the journey back to Bideford. The sunset over the sea is a magical sight, casting a golden glow over the water and cliffs. After a day filled with adventure, you’ll return to the comfort of your luxurious cottage at Westward Living, where Kathy and Chris have created a perfect space for you to relax and reflect on your island escape. The hot tub cottages are the perfect end to a day exploring around the island.
A day trip to Lundy Island, personally recommended by Kathy and Chris, is more than just a getaway; it’s a chance to experience the natural beauty and history of North Devon in a truly unique way. Whether you’re drawn by the wildlife, the breathtaking landscapes, or the charm of exploring a place where time seems to stand still, Lundy Island offers an experience that you’ll treasure long after your holiday ends.
